According to academic research, allowing "email received" and other notifications (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) to interrupt you every 5 minutes reduces your average uninterrupted work period to about 3.5 minutes— creating a significant drag on productivity. Allowing yourself to check in on messages of all types only once an hour or even half-hour gives you much longer, more productive work periods without increasing the time required to manage messages.
